First thing is to decide who you are making the gift for. Really take some time to list on paper that person’s likes, dislikes, hobbies, sports, major life events, hopes, dreams, foods, flowers, favorite place, people, vacation, anything significant to that person. You actually might have to “interview” them to glean this information.
It’s possible you won’t be able to keep this gift a total secret but you could inform them in a generic way that you’re working on a gift and need some information and help from them to complete it, but refuse to tell what the project is.
One amazing photo gift is to have a professional hard bound photo book made. There’s a wonderful resource called Shutterfly that does a great job, you completely design it yourself and their prices are very reasonable. It truly would be an heirloom quality gift that would be treasured for a lifetime.
You’ll load the photos you want the photo book to contain; you’ll be designing and organizing what order to put those photos in.
Another idea in doing a photo book is to also add some stock images into the photo book of favorite topics and places important to that person. These can be purchased at very high quality and for very inexpensive prices. For instance, if someone is a football fan, not many families have great quality images of a close up of a football lying around. You could purchase a stock image of a close up of a football, or a field or a goal post or any other picture that caught your eye, and use it as an element to a page in that person’s photo book. The possibilities are endless here.
Calendars can also be an amazing gift targeted towards either an individual or are entire family. Some ideas could be antique vintage photos from past generations in the family photos, or current ones of the family, or photos of the most recent year, a favorite pet series, a vacation series, whatever you like. Another cool idea with photo calendars is you can have printed on the calendars every family member’s birthday on the calendar to remind everyone of those dates. These calendars could be purchased many at a time to give to the entire family, or individually created for each person.
